RECORDER NEWS 2018-2019
Grade Four students are continuing to learn to play the soprano baroque recorder this year.
They reviewed their Grade Three knowledge of notes B, A, G back in November and have since
learned the note low D, E and high C and D. After learning "Jingle Bells" in December, we learned
"B A Superhero," " "On the Yangtze" with accompaniment on xylophones and metallophones,
"BAGE Blues," and "Village Drums" with drum accompaniment. We are currently working on
"Country Swing" which uses our new note: low D. Coming up will be Beethoven's "Ode to
Joy." Our Composition project will be assigned in April. Students will be creating an eight measure recorder song. Each class decides on one composition to learn and perform at our annual recorder concert.
Recorder Karate:
Students are very excited about the opportunity to play for Karate "belts" with our recorder
Karate program! (These belts are colored elastics that are placed at the end of the recorder.)
I am asking students to share at least two solos from the following list before our June concert:
Students may play a solo during music class or ask to share outside of class if preferred.
White Belt: "Hot Cross Buns"
Yellow Belt: "Variations on Hot Cross Buns" and Refrain from "Skin and Bones"
Orange Belt: "On the Yangtze," "Village Drums" and "BAGE Blues"
Green Belt: "Jingle Bells"
Blue Belt: "Country Swing"
Purple Belt: "Ode to Joy"
Black Belt: "Marine's Hymn"
Remembering to bring recorders and music folders to class each week:
Grade Four students are expected to bring recorders and music folders to their general music
class each week. This habit is essential for making progress in music this year.
Some helpful tips for remembering:
*Many students find that having their recorder and folder "live in their backpack"
much appreciated!!
LOST RECORDERS: Replacement recorders are available if needed. If your student needs
another recorder, please send $5.50 cash in an envelope marked "Mrs. Oliver---Recorder,
the student's name and the color requested." (Blue, green or pink).
EXTRA HELP FOR RECORDER STUDENTS: If your student would like some extra help with recorder, please remind them that I am available Wednesdays from 1:45-2:30 p.m. and by
appointment in fishbowl Music Room #119. Also please feel free to e-mail me with questions
or concerns at [email protected]
DIGITAL RECORDER RESOURCES:
There are several Apps available on the App store that will help students practice recorder and
reinforce skills:
"At Play Music Recorder,"" Play Along Recorder" and "Ace Recorder" are some apps that I have
seen that help students practice recorder at home. Ace Recorder has a good fingering chart.
"At Play Music Recorder" has games and activities in sequenced lessons that help
students with basic recorder skills.
YOU TUBE has lots of videos to help instruct students with basic recorder skills in breathing
and note-playing.
Here are the names of a few that I have watched (Just go to You-tube and search for the
names):

- when not in use is a very helpful technique for remembering to bring these items to class *Other students find that writing a reminder in their agenda book the night before is helpful. *Sometimes parents decide to purchase an additional recorder to stay at school to eliminate the challenge of remembering to bring a recorder for a certain day each week.
